One Sweet Treat has been an idea in my mind for a long time, but until recently we have started offering services to more than our family and close friends. Our cakes are now available for everyone to enjoy.
Making cakes and treats was never considered a hobby to me. I always knew I wanted to do this, I just didn't know when or how to start.
I was a self-taught chocolatier in México (Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua to be specific). "Who doesn't love chocolate?", I kept asking myself. In 2005, I realized I loved it enough to open a business. With the help of two other friends we started making specialty chocolates for selected stores, offered personalized chocolate confections, and often held gatherings where we presented our products and gifts to people. Those private parties were fun and kept us focused on always offering confections with added personal touches in every design. We also offered tasty pastries and from time to time made specialty cakes for selected customers.
The business continued to grow and I was enjoying it very much, but it's success and demand made me realize that I couldn't handle running this small business, going to college full-time and still having to keep a separate part-time job. Sadly, after three rewarding years I had to give up my dream and move to El Paso, TX and concentrate in graduating from college.
I came to Des Moines, Iowa in 2000 (by the way, the weather was a shock to me). I worked for a big company in downtown for a couple of years, I got married, went to work for another big company for another two years. I met my wonderful husband and we had a beautiful baby girl. During this whole time, the memories of my chocolate business kept coming back. I often had dreams of starting all over again, but how and when were always the main questions.
Having no specific plans of starting anything, I started buying new equipment (since I left everything back in México) and acquiring lots of reading materials to check what were the latest trends. I ended up getting my hands on a lot of baking equipment and I decided to start decorating a few cakes every once in a while. I managed taking several classes at the Wilton school in Chicago and after taking the last course, I knew that it was time.
After having my baby, we decided that I would stay at home and I continued baking, experimenting and keeping up with the latest and most popular ideas and tastes. For some reason I shifted from a faithful chocolatier to making and decorating cakes and cookies. Now my passion is for decorating and designing around the world of cakes, cookies and pastries.
My dear and hard working mom helps me out tremendously. Her true gift is in the kitchen and she has a real talent for cooking. Baking is nothing hard for her either. I do most of the planning and decorating and she is really involved in baking. We both love to come up with new ideas and recipes and we have fun doing this. Aside from being a busy mom, this is now my profession and with the help of my mom, I intent to put all my energy and love into each and every single piece of art that we produce.
We are able to provide everything from a small and intimate cake to the large cakes needed for a large and fancy event. Each one of our creations is individually planned and designed to celebrate your special event.
We prefer not to freeze or refrigerate our cakes and cookies, so everything we bake is freshly made to order. We do this to offer our customers the best taste possible. As a result of this, I purposely limit the number of people I can serve or orders I can take in a week. With this i can assure you that your cake will not only be beautiful to look at, but delicious to eat.
From beginning to end, your cake will be treated as a one of a kind masterpiece made just for you, therefore you can be sure that your cake or treats will be as special as the event itself.
